A Note from the Principal's Office

Hello Falcon Families!

It was good to see families out at our Trunk of Treat this past Wednesday - our student clubs had a ton of fun decorating their trunks and passing out candy to our future Falcons and Falcon families!  Plus, the rain paused for Trunk or Treat, making it even more magical.  I hope everyone who made it out had a wonderful time celebrating with us!

I wanted to share some data with you that shows the impact of our Bell to bell No cell policy this year.  There are several positive benefits for students, mainly improving engagement and participation in their classes.  Another reason we decided to enact and enforce a school-wide no cellphone/headphone policy during class time is to reduce the amount of communication between students for the purpose of getting together to engage in vaping and/or drug use. When we compared the number of referrals for substance use last year by 11/01 there were 32 referrals.  This year we have had 10 referrals.  This is a significant decrease, largely attributed to students having limited ability to use their devices to meet up during class time in bathrooms.

Additionally, we have seen an increase in the number of teacher-managed referrals (minors) from last year, and a correlating decrease in admin managed referrals (majors).  The significance of this is that we are increasing the type of discipline that keeps students in their classes, focusing on reteaching the classroom and school-wide expectations so students learn positive behaviors as well as the classes’ contents.

Our belief is that all discipline is a form of learning, not simply punishment.  Balancing that with ensuring the safety of our students, staff, and the school is our ongoing top priority.

We hope to see many of our families at the Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences next week.  See below for all details regarding the times our teachers will be available for families to drop in to talk.  You can also email any teacher to set up a phone call, a meeting for a different day/time, or to ask any questions if you aren’t able to make it in during our Conferences.

Have a great weekend!

GO FALCONS!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held at PHS on November 6 and 7. Conferences are drop-in, meaning that families are free to come on any day or time that fits their schedules!

On Wednesday, November 6, conferences will be from 12:30-2:55.

On Thursday, November 7, conferences will be from 12:30-2:55, and then again from 4:00-7:00pm.

Students will be released from school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday that week at 11:25.

Conferences will be held in the commons in an arena-style format. Teachers will be arranged alphabetically by departments, and teachers who cannot be present will have signup sheets available for parents who would like them to reach out.

While the focus for fall conferences is mainly students with Ds and Fs, all families are welcome to attend.

We will also be hosting our annual Ceramics/Art Silent Auction in the Senior Lounge!

Additionally, we will have a table with new and gently-used shoes available for families. These were recently donated to the PHS community, are free, and are first-come, first-served!

Additionally, the testing center will be open during afternoon conferences on Wednesday and Thursday for students to do work!

See you soon, Falcons!

News From BGPS:

Chickenpox Cases

In recent weeks, Battle Ground Public Schools has experienced chickenpox cases at several buildings. When this happens, Clark County Public Health may direct students who do not have documented immunization to stay home for 21 days to reduce the chance of the disease spreading further. A student may be able to return to school sooner with documented proof of immunity. If you have questions about your child’s chickenpox immunization status, please reach out to their school nurse.

Immunization Requirements

Washington’s Department of Public Health requires that students who do not have all of their legally required immunizations or an approved exemption on file must be excluded from classes starting Friday, Nov. 15. Letters for families who are currently out of compliance were mailed on Friday, Oct. 25. Visit the Washington Department of Health website for more information on what vaccines are required to attend school in the state of Washington, or how to obtain an approved certificate of exemption.

Middle School Sports - Season Two Registration Open

Registration is open now for season two of middle school sports, including girls volleyball and boys soccer (both starting Oct. 28). Students who participate in sports must have completed a sports physical (physical clearance is good for 24 months). A completed sports physical must be turned in before students can participate in organized sports.

Learn more and start the registration process on the district website.

Consent to share

Students wishing to take advantage of no-fee sports or other activities must have a new meal benefit application and consent to share form (русский) (Español) on file before registering for fall sports, even if you had a previous approved application on file. The consent to share can also be completed as part of the annual student update through Skyward.

Aspire Highly Capable Program referral Window Open

We are excited to announce that the Aspire Highly Capable Program is now accepting referrals for testing! Aspire is our highly capable/gifted education program designed to support students who demonstrate advanced academic abilities or potential. Get the details on the process and timeline.

New Safety Protocols

This year, Battle Ground Public Schools joins most Southwest Washington schools and districts in using the Standard Response Protocol for emergencies. Depending on the situation, a school will be placed in a hold, secure, lockdown, evacuation or shelter. See what these terms mean. This common language helps schools, first responders and the community communicate clearly and effectively to reduce misunderstandings in emergency situations.

Immunization Compliance Deadline

If you recently received an email or letter regarding your child’s immunization status, please contact their school as soon as possible. Starting Friday, Nov. 15, students must have all of the legally required immunizations or an approved exemption from the immunization requirements to continue attending school.

Report Incidents Anonymously With SafeSchools

Please report bullying, intimidation, harassment, threats and safety concerns using our anonymous reporting system. Reporters can remain anonymous. Emergencies should always be reported to 911. Learn more about emergency procedures and safety protocols.

Report, Don’t Repost

If you see or hear of a possible threat, please report it to law enforcement directly and/or to school staff. This is the best and most helpful action because it begins an investigation and helps to limit the potential for misinformation to spread.

Reposting or sharing a threat on social media in an attempt to warn others spreads the threat farther from its original source and may cause unnecessary alarm and fear.

You can report bullying, intimidation, harassment, threats and safety concerns using our anonymous reporting system. Emergencies should always be reported to 911.
