Students at Laurin Middle School will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math during the month of May. Students in 5th and 8th grade will also be taking the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science.
The results from these tests provide a picture of whether students are on track with their learning and are based on a progression of skills and knowledge that are needed at particular grades to ensure students are high school, college, and career ready.
Our school is scheduled to take the Smarter Balanced tests in May. Here’s the complete schedule so families can plan appointments or time away from school around these important dates:
Math SBA: May 19th and 21st
ELA SBA: May 26th and May 28th
5th Grade WCAS: May 11th and 12th
8th Grade WCAS: May 14th and 15th
To be prepared to test, all students will need to have wired headphones or earbuds that can be plugged into their Chromebook. Wireless or bluetooth headphones are not able to be used on the tests. In addition, smart watches, cell phones, and other electronic devices are not permitted on or near the students during testing and must be powered completely off. Students who use wireless noise cancelling headphones will not be able to wear themIf students are found with smart watches, phones, or electronic devices, students' tests may be invalidated. Please discuss these details with your student prior to our testing week.
Here are some things you can do to help for testing days:
Encourage your child to do their very best on everything they do in school, including these end-of-year state tests.
Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep the night before each test and has a healthy breakfast.
Ensure your student has charged their Chromebook completely the night before testing.
Knowing your student’s achievement level (1 through 4) in specific areas will provide important information. Teachers use these assessments as one of the many tools to understand individual student achievement (how much a child knows and can do at the end of the year) and individual progress (how much a child has improved over the previous year). Teachers also use these results to identify student academic strengths and weaknesses and adjust instruction accordingly. In addition, families can use this information to know where students are excelling, on track, or struggling. Testing reports will be shared with families when they are made available to the district.

It is important to remember that state assessments provide only one measure of student learning, but when combined with grades, classroom activities, unit quizzes and tests, and district-level assessments, these end-of-year tests can help to provide a more complete picture of a student’s knowledge and skills.
