One-hour late start on Wednesday, April 30

Wednesday, April 30, is a one-hour late start at most schools to allow additional time for teachers to work together to implement the best practices of high-quality instruction. Students will be released at the usual times.

Budget update

As a result of the recent failure of Proposition 9, the replacement education and operations levy, the district will need to make up to $20 million in cuts for the upcoming school year. The cuts will impact all aspects of the district including:

  • Safety

  • Instruction and instructional support

  • Counselors

  • Nursing

  • Teacher librarians

  • Class sizes

  • Extracurricular activities

  • Operations

Approximately 170 full-time staff positions may be cut, in addition to approximately 30 part-time positions. Many programs will be affected. Some staff may be able to move to different positions in BGPS. The district will work closely with its labor associations to meet contractual requirements regarding staffing changes.

How the potential cuts were chosen

The potential cuts were chosen with a focus on maintaining staff positions with a direct impact on student learning and those legally required to meet contractual, state or federal mandates. Because staff costs make up approximately 80% of the budget (85% is average for Washington state school districts), cutting positions is required to balance the budget. Positions not paid for by the state were considered as potential cuts. For example, the state pays for 1.9 security positions for the district as a whole. The remaining positions were funded through local levy dollars.

Next steps

The board of directors will review potential budget cuts at its April 28 meeting. These cuts are a worst-case scenario. The actual amount of cuts will depend on any increases in state funding, board decisions regarding use of the district’s fund balance (one-time money) and other factors.

Final decisions regarding cuts will be made later this spring. When recommendations are finalized, student safety and well-being will be the top priorities.

The cuts will take effect for the 2025-26 school year, and reduced or eliminated positions and programs would not begin to be restored until the 2026-27 school year at the earliest, depending on funding.

Boundary exceptions for 2025-26 school year

All families with in-district or out-of-district boundary exceptions (choice transfers) for the 2024-2025 school year need to reapply for the 2025-26 school year.

Please note a change to Choice Transfers for 2024-25 and beyond. Battle Ground Public Schools has switched from paper forms to an online application through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Applications for out-of-district student Choice Transfers in 2025-26 will be accepted starting at 7 a.m. on May 1. Applications submitted prior to that date will be denied, and the family will need to submit a new application after May 1. Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received.

More information about this process and forms are on the district website.

Survey of BGPS students, families

You and your family have an opportunity to share your thoughts in an optional survey. All parents and guardians should have received the survey via email on Tuesday, April 8. Students in fifth through 12th grades also received the survey, unless a parent or guardian opted them out in the annual student update. The surveys will close on May 2. Learn more.

JROTC cadets compete at regional marksmanship event

Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from Battle Ground and Prairie high schools recently competed at the western regional championships for the Civilian Marksmanship Program (3P) at the Mountain America Center in Sandy, Utah.

"I am very proud of these athletes," said Lt. Col. (ret.) Andrew Woodrow, senior aerospace science instructor at BGHS. "This is a tough sport that demands concentration, skill and nerves of steel to even earn a spot at this level."

During a grueling two-day competition, cadets faced teams from Alaska, Nevada, Utah, Texas, Wyoming and Washington state. Prairie High School cadet Seth Fisher was the top local finisher, coming in sixth overall.

Battle Ground High School was represented by Brianna Hall, Jack McAleer, Charles Weiner, Noah Colagross and Isaac Yenderrozos. Prairie High School's team included Fisher, Alisha Sundar, Travis Davis and Bennett Adams. Way to go, cadets!
