Battle Ground Public Schools improves financial health score

A graph depicting financial health scores for BGPS and other districts

Battle Ground Public Schools’ financial health score saw a boost in recently updated rankings from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, which monitors all Washington state school districts’ finances.

Battle Ground’s score improved from 3.05 to 3.35 for the 2023-24 school year, the most recent for which scores are available. The average score for all other K-12 Clark County school districts last year was 3.02.

The scores are intended to provide a snapshot of a school district’s financial health over time. Higher scores indicate greater financial stability and ability to respond to unexpected expenditures.

More details can be found on the district website, including a look at 2024-25 and beyond.

CASEE program marks 20th year of pond survey

A student examines a salamander recovered from a pond on the CASEE campus

On a drizzly morning in March, students from the Center for Agriculture, Science and Environmental Education put on wading gear, grab their equipment and trudge out to a pair of manmade ponds on their 80-acre outdoor learning campus in Brush Prairie. There, they wade in and recover traps set up the previous week, carefully cataloguing and tagging whatever they find.

“The purpose of the study is to look for the presence/absence of amphibian species in our two ponds and to track amphibian populations over time,” said Irene Catlin, environmental sciences teacher with CASEE. “Amphibians are sensitive to environmental changes, so they are excellent bioindicators.”

This year marked the 20th for the annual pond survey, started in cooperation with Charlie Crissafulli, a research ecologist in the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station.

“We do have a robust data set,” Catlin said. “Twenty years of data can allow us to really see the big picture of how amphibians are doing in our own backyard over time.”

Learn more about the study and an all-day amphibian summit happening at the CASEE campus on Thursday, May 8.
