Update on the 2025-26 district budget

A graphic highlighting budget reductions for the 2025-26 school year

While it is never easy making budget decisions that result in the loss of valued staff members, Battle Ground Public Schools remains committed to transparency and communication throughout this process.

Due to some changes in our budget outlook, we will be able to preserve about 30% of the positions and programs that were initially slated for reduction. However, approximately 70% of the planned reductions will still move forward due to the loss of local levy funding.

See the list of positions and programs that will be preserved and what will remain on the cut list, and find out how these decisions were made.

For more information and to remain updated throughout this process, please follow our budget cuts webpage.

High school social-emotional learning curriculum adoption moves to final stages; community input requested

A graphic reading High School SEL Curriculum Community Input
Find out why the district needs new SEL curriculum at the high school level.

Battle Ground Public Schools is considering new curriculum for social and emotional learning that would be used starting next school year, and eventually affect all high school students in the district. We believe that input from families and community members is essential to the process of adopting this new curriculum.

Following a year-long process, the committee reviewing updated high school social-emotional learning curriculum has narrowed their selection to a single finalist. The first reading of the proposed curriculum will be during the school board's July 28 meeting. Prior to board consideration, there are several additional opportunities for parents, guardians, staff, students and community members to provide their input.

  • Virtual review night: Tuesday, June 10, starting at 6 p.m. via Zoom (meeting information). Due to copyright restrictions, this meeting will not be recorded.

  • In-person review night: Thursday, June 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at CASEE A  (11104 N.E. 149th St., Brush Prairie, WA 98606). Drop in anytime, no RSVP required.

  • By appointment: June 2-June 22. To make an appointment, please email projectaware@battlegroundps.org or call Assistant Director of Project AWARE Erick Suksdorf at 360-885-5440.

  • View limited samples online: *Online samples are limited due to copyright restrictions. To view the curriculum in its entirety, please attend one of the review nights or request an in-person appointment.

Five BGPS schools earn high marks for performance

graphic for 2023-24 Washington State Recognized School

More than a quarter of Battle Ground Public Schools’ 19 schools have been recognized by the Washington State Board of Education for exceptional achievement, growth and efforts to close educational gaps during the 2023-24 academic year. Earned by only 16% of public schools statewide, this recognition highlights achievements in key areas of student success.

The honored BGPS schools are:

  • CAM Academy

  • Chief Umtuch Middle School

  • Yacolt Primary School

  • Daybreak Middle School

  • Tukes Valley Primary School

Discover how each school earned this honor.

Said Deputy Superintendent Shelly Whitten, “I am very proud of these schools for all of their work to help each student be successful. This award indicates sustained work to improve student learning. Professional Learning Communities, school improvement plans, waiver days and other efforts to improve instructional practice are all paying off. Congratulations to the staff, students and families at each of these schools!”

Roof repairs underway at several buildings

Thanks to funding from the voter-approved 2024 capital levy, work is underway to replace roofs at Chief Umtuch and the Tukes Valley and Daybreak campuses.

These projects are expected to improve the longevity of these buildings. Future capital levy-funded projects are in the works and we will have more to share over the summer.

Perseverance pays off for Captain Strong student

Pop quiz: If you could choose between a popsicle, an ice cream sandwich or being a primary school principal for 10 minutes, which would you choose?

Abel Mulkey, a second grader at Captain Strong Primary, chose the third option. He earned the right by consistently demonstrating perseverance, a major focus of the school's LEAD program that rewards students for demonstrating expected behavior. LEAD stands for:

  • Learn responsibility

  • Exhibit respect

  • Always be safe

  • Do your best

Asked what he liked best about his time as principal, Abel said, "Getting out of class." 😂
