Amboy Middle School
Students in Semester 1 Health and Fitness classes will receive Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CSHE) instruction starting on November 20. If your child will be participating in all of the lessons, you do not need to take any action. If after reviewing the curriculum you want to opt out your child(ren) from receiving some or all of the instruction, you will need to fill out the Sex ED Opt Out Form in Skyward (see instructions here). You must opt your child(ren) out for each course, even if you have done so in the past. You may not be able to access the forms on the Skyward app. However, you can use your student's Chromebook, or we will have Chromebooks available at school during conference time. If you do not have access to Skyward, please contact our office at 360-885-6050 for assistance.
Please be aware that students who are NOT opted out through Skyward by November 13 will be participating in CSHE. Parents of Semester 2 Health and Fitness students - Semester 2 CSHE instruction will take place in the spring. You have the option to opt out your students now or wait until spring for further instructions. Click here for more information on the curriculum and how to opt out.

MATH
5th Grade math will be learning about adding and subtracting fractions. We'll also continue to work on multiplication facts and strategies.
HISTORY
For the month of November, students are delving into Early American Civilizations. We are specifically looking at different Native American groups and how colonization affected them.
READING/ELA
In Reading/ELA students are continuing to learn how cultural beliefs and values guide people as we read aloud Scott O'Dell's Thunder Rolling in the Mountains. In November we will focus on how to write a proper paragraph. We will learn how writing is organized and practice writing both summaries and compare/contrast essays using evidence and elaboration.
CHROMEBOOKS
Just a friendly reminder that Chromebooks are considered to be a school supply, so we need ALL students to come prepared each day with it charged and ready to go. We are still frequently seeing many students with Chromebooks not charged or left at home. If a Chromebook is missing, please help your child locate the Chromebook or report it lost. Our curriculum in all subject areas typically requires daily use on the Chromebook. Also, please remind your students that Chromebooks are only to be used for educational purposes.
40 BOOK CHALLENGE
Keep up the great reading! Remember, in order to read 40 books by the end of the year, you need to read about 1 book/week. Don't forget to read from a variety of genres.
CONFERENCES
We look forward to meeting with you and your child for conferences November 5th-7th. Due to the schedule, conferences will be limited to 20 minutes. Conferences are scheduled back to back, so we'll need to make sure to start and end on time. If you are unable to attend your scheduled conference, please let the teacher know ASAP.
Grade sheets are sent home at least every other week. You can also check Family Access any time. Students are encouraged to check both Skyward and Google Classroom at least weekly.
What we're working on in...
Science: finishing up metabolism unit
History: ancient China then ancient Greece
Math: finishing up ratios and percents and moving on to division
ELA: Unit 2-Recipe for Success
Please remind your student to bring their Chromebook to school fully charged every day. Also, no wireless earbuds are allowed in the 7th grade classrooms.
We look forward to talking with you about your student at Fall conferences November 5-7.
MATH
The math classes have finished up Unit 2 Proportional Relationships. We will be starting Unit 3 Circles next. The Advanced class finished a project that goes along with Unit 2 and will start Chapter 3 in the Pre Algebra book.
ELA
In ELA students are working in Unit 2 and the theme is adolescence. Our guiding question is "How do the challenges of adolescence contribute to our growth?". Students will be reading non-fiction, short stories, and poetry throughout the unit. There will also be lessons in introducing evidence with context and adding reasoning to writing. The unit will finish in late November with a literary analysis essay with a focus in figurative language.
SCIENCE
In science we have been learning to identify variables and learning to create neat, accurate graphs to display data. In addition, we are reviewing plate motion that students learned about in previous science classes. We will soon be starting a project in which students will apply some of their motion knowledge to local geologic events and linking this knowledge to why fossils are found on different continents.
HISTORY
We will be studying Washington territory and statehood. Road to statehood of how land was developed and cities were formed. Snack donations would be appreciated for students who do not have snacks.
High School and Beyond
We will be having a guest speaker in our ELA classes on November 25-26 about high school programs, the process, and other pathways to graduation, plus interest surveys that will list many career opportunities of possible interest to them.
ELA
We will be beginning Unit 2 on Conveying Courage, which looks at how poets and speechwriters convey a message of courage through their poems or speeches.
HISTORY
We are identifying the events or acts that led the American Colonies to rebel against their king. This will lead into an analysis of the Declaration of Independence.
SCIENCE
Students are understanding how to get supplies to an area after a natural disaster occurs. Researching, designing and testing students apply their knowledge and what they have learned about forces and collisions to design an emergency supply pod drop.
MATH
We are entering Unit 3 focused on ratio and proportions represented in tables, equations, and graphs with an emphasis on slope.
ALGEBRA
Students are creating and solving linear equations. They are also learning how to set up Systems of Linear Equations to solve word problems: (Age, Work, Mixtures, RTD, Equal Values)
HOMEWORK
There is no homework policy but students are expected to complete assignments at home if not completed in the time allotted at school or have been absent from school.
I want to say thank you for the donation of protein bars that I received this week. It is very much appreciated and came from a family who has not even used the Eagle's Nest. In the past, most of the snacks I gave out in the Eagle's Nest were donated by WinCo. Most of the rest I bought myself. WinCo no longer makes donations unless it is for a fundraiser. If your family has the ability to donate any food items to the Eagle's Nest, it would be greatly appreciated. We welcome any healthy snacks such as granola bars, bottled water, cheese & crackers, peanut butter & crackers, etc. I can repackage things like bags of popcorn, pretzels, boxed cereal, granola, trail mix, tortilla chips, and crackers into Ziploc bags. Please consider donating a food item to the Eagle's Nest the next time you are shopping.
October's character trait was respect, and it was also national bullying awareness month. November's character trait will be perseverance. Please ask your student how they can show perseverance in their daily lives.
You can restrict your child's meal account purchases; for example, no charging, no breakfast, cash only a la carte.
If you would like to restrict your child's meal account purchase options, please complete the form or contact our Skyward Meal Account Specialist at 360-885-6653 with details.
Please note: If your student has allergy (dietary) restrictions, please go through your school nurse to ensure all personnel are adequately notified.
CHICKENPOX CASES
In recent weeks, Battle Ground Public School has experienced chickenpox cases at several buildings. When this happens, Clark County Public Health may direct students who do not have documented immunization to stay home for 21 days to reduce the chance of the disease spreading further. A student may be able to return to school sooner with documented proof of immunity. If you have questions about your child's chickenpox immunization status, please reach out to their school nurse.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Washington's Department of Public Health requires that students who do not have all of their legally required immunizations or an approved exemption on file must be excluded from classes starting Friday, Nov. 15. Letters for families who are currently out of compliance were mailed on Friday, Oct. 25. Visit the Washington Department of Health website for more information on what vaccines are required to attend school in the state of Washington, or how to obtain an approved certificate of exemption.

IMMUNIZATION COMPLIANCE DEADLINE
If you recently received an email or letter regarding your child's immunization status, please contact their school as soon as possible. Starting Friday, November 15, students must have all of the legally required immunizations or an approved exemption from the immunization requirements to continue attending school.
REPORT, DON'T POST
If you see or hear of a possible threat, please report it to law enforcement directly and/or school staff. This is the best and most helpful action because it begins an investigation and helps to limit the potential for misinformation to spread.
Reposting or sharing a threat on social media in an attempt to warn others spreads the threat farther away from its original source and may cause unnecessary alarm and fear.
You can report bullying, intimidation, harassment, threats and safety concerns using our anonymous report system. Emergencies should always be reported to 911.
GET PREPARED FOR WINTER WEATHER
November is officially the start of winter weather season in southwest Washington. That means there is always the chance that snow or hazardous road conditions could delay or cancel school. Here are some tips on how you can be prepared:

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS - SEASON TWO REGISTRATION OPEN
Registration is now open for season two of middle schools sports, including girls volleyball and boys soccer (both starting October 28). Students who participate in sports must have a sports physical before practices begin (physical clearance is good for 24 months). Sports physicals must be completed prior to the start of practices.
Learn more and start the registration process on the district website.
CONSENT TO SHARE
Students wishing to take advantage of no-fee sports or other activities must have a new meal benefit application and consent to share form on file before registering for fall sports, even if you had a previous approved application on file. NEW SAFETY PROTOCOLS
This year, Battle Ground Public Schools joins most Southwest Washington schools and districts in using the Standard Response Protocol for emergencies. Depending on the situation, a school will be placed in a hold, secure, lockdown, evacuation or shelter. See what these terms mean. This common language helps schools, first responders and the community communicate clearly and effectively to reduce misunderstandings in emergency situations.
